Natural Language Processing/Text Mining Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Scientist
Postdoctoral and research fellow training positions are currently available in Dr. Jeremiah Brown’s research program at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice. The successful candidate will join Dr. Brown’s multi-disciplinary research team composed of research faculty, research fellows, staff and students with a range of expertise including: data science, natural language processing (NLP), machine learning, biostatistics, health services research, biomedical informatics, and computational biology. The successful candidate will join an intellectually vibrant, interactive and collaborative community of investigators across the US. Dr. Brown’s NHLBI funded research program is focused on developing an automated surveillance toolkit built in three independent electronic medical records (EMR) with external validation in multiple EMRs. The research program will combine the information in clinical notes with structured data to quantify the risk for readmission after an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) directly from the EMR, validate, and demonstrate its portability across institutions to other EMRs. Our approach will expand the use of NLP tools to novel variables previously only obtained through manual extraction (e.g., social risk factors) and develop a generalizable and portable toolkit built in parallel on two independent EMRs. This approach will significantly advance our ability to perform risk assessments for AMI patients, enabling improved clinical care and improved patient outcomes.
The qualified candidates should be highly motivated and have a doctoral degree with research experience and training in one of the following fields: computational linguistics, data science, natural language processing (NLP), machine learning, biomedical informatics, bioinformatics, computational biology or related fields upon the start date. The ideal candidate should have experience in conducting research in NLP/text mining and in developing novel algorithms to analyze medical records. The ideal candidate should also have experience in conducting clinical or biomedical research, analyzing and using health risk factors and epidemiological methods related to clinical outcomes. Previous post-doctoral research experience in these fields is desirable. Applicants must possess good communication skills and be fluent in both spoken and written English. Funding is available to support this position for up to two years. Salary is based on NIH standards. The candidate will have the opportunity to access many high throughput datasets, state-of-the-art core facilities and to interact with leading investigators at The Dartmouth Institute and collaborators at other leading academic institutions in NLP.
Interested applicants should submit their curriculum vitae, a detailed letter of interest, and the names of three potential references to Dr. Jeremiah Brown. Correspondence should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org or mailed to:
